Site users anonymously submit prices they paid or heard were paid for diverted prescription drugs, specifying the drug formulation, dose, and the US city or state in which the transaction occurred. Given the interest but lack of scientific efforts to collect street price information, we sought to evaluate whether online crowdsourcing could be used to measure black market street prices. Although street price data are collected by local law enforcement, they have only occasionally been reported at a national level and are rarely made available for public health research .
Finally, our study studied solely buprenorphine to examine the need for treatment for opioid dependency. Because of this, we were unable to interview users to obtain qualitative data regarding why users turn to the black-market to purchase buprenorphine. Holding all other variables constant, the price of street buprenorphine in summer months was 22.26% higher, which translates to a $4.21 increase per 8mg dose. For example, although death rates involving opioids remain highest among whites, death rates for other races rose significantly in the past five years, indicating growing need for treatment in these communities (24). While this suggests that areas with greater percent white experience greater black-market demand, higher demand among white buprenorphine users does not mean that treatment need is greater among whites. This is a measurable difference in price considering the daily frequency and sustained course of buprenorphine treatment.
